Hi
I know this question or similar ones have been asked lots before but im after a bit of advise so please be kind
I have just booked a night in southwark travelodge for the 29th Dec for my 13 year old and I, please say i have chose a good travelodge!! and i am looking for ideas for us to do thats easy for us to find, would like to do a show but had a quick look and they seem quite pricey.
Any advice on place to go and see and eat at a reasonable price would be great and even areas to stay away from.
WE had a day in London in the summer and did the eye and river cruise and walked around saw big ben, downing st bucking palace a quick tour of harrods.
Thanks

Yes southwark is a good one and in a good position too
Check out trip advisor for any more info on it.0 -
Southwark is really near to the tate modern and thats quite good to while away the time in...otherwise theres Borough Market just down one tube stop or an easy walk...
The RV1 bus is a good one to get for a tourist look around as it goes to covent garden and via most of the sights without the sightseeing price tag...
If you want a nice breakfast then Franks is good opposite the holiday inn express or Harpers down near borough market...about £5 each should give you a fry up and drink...
Great place to eat in the evening is Vapiano...pasta and pizza in the new area opposite mecure hotel...or there is a marks and spencers food on the go if you want to pick up a light sandwich or salad...
Also fairly near in the area are the usual places like pizza express and nandos so there is plenty of choice for food...
Have a great day...frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

Southwark is a fairly new TL in a good location, as 2 min walk to the tube station and near the embankment. It would be worth booking the breakfast as kids eat free and it is a buffet style one. Your 13 year old would probably love the London Dungeons (as my now 14 year old and friends do). You can often get 2for 1 deals (look on the 2for 1 train offers as usually on there) or keep an eye on lastminute.com just before you go. The Imperial war museum is walking distance from your TL and the museums at South Kensington are free entry and good. There should also be outdoor ice skating on at the Natural History Museum then. As for theatre shows you can often get reasonable prices for day seats at the theatre box office, for example Wicked is a fab show and they reserve the first 2 rows to sell on the day for £27.50.0

A tip for the Travel Lodge at Southwark is that you will probably be directed to the Southwark tube station which is on the Jubilee Line, this sometimes has delays or engineering works and to get anywhere decent you would often need to change lines. Waterloo station which has the Northern Line, Jubilee and Bakerloo lines is a shortish walk and about the same distance is Borough Station which is Northern Line.
I often work next to the TL and often walk to Borough Station if I need the Northern Line as it's quicker than getting on at Southwark and changing, it's a nice walk.
Interestingly Travel Lodge are in the process of building a new hotel about 100 metres (As the crow flies) from the Southwark branch
There's a 24 hour shop right outside the TL and just around the corner in Great Suffolk Street (Turn left at the traffic lights) is a Tesco Metro. If your there on a week day, there is a lovely pop up Thai kitchen that does lovely food at lunch time in the arch opposite the TL)0 -
Thanks for the advice, is it a safe area, i mean if we went to a nightime show would we feel safe getting back on our own and what would be the best method, would like to see ghost or wicked!
We go on a thursday and come back on the friday
Any other info gratefully recieved x0 -
The area directly around the hotel and from southwark tube station to the hotel is not really that residential...more commercial and office space so whilst it has a bustling atmosphere in the day it is not always that busy at night...Ive been out quite late during the summer months and not had a problem but to be honest its probably fair to say that where ever you travel in winter after dark you will need to be aware of your surroundings.frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

We went in the summer, and with Tesco Deals converted to Pizza Express vouchers we ate near there, sorry don't know which Pizza Express but we sat up stairs looking straight out onto the Thames, and ate effectively for free, very nice!:j0

that is indeed a lovely setting for the pizza express...its Bankside I believe...they accept Tesco deal vouchers but they dont accept the 2 for 1 vouchers or discount vouchers that pizza express offer online from time to time...that resturant is one of the ones listed as an exception...frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
