In a Mess What would you do ?

This thread is going to be cathartic for me If I explain I am male 52 recently unemployed ( July) just out of hospital having been diagnosed with cancer all clear need Sept to recover. Married own our own house with around £150k equity ( 60k mortgage) and here is the killer I owe 25k on credit cards got myself in this position over about 4 years having lost a good job couldn't get full time work so went self employed worked 6 days a week all hours ended up earning around 16k a year so to keep everything going borrowed used credit cards to keep a a float didn't tell the family I am the classic " swan" all calm above water and paddling like mad under to keep a float.

Thanks to family loans I can pay the bills for Sept I am claiming benefits as of August ( when diagnosed with cancer ) which equates to around £ 60.00 per week and should get Housing Ben from local district council

Mortgage all up to date not missed a payment but I am paying around £ 450 on mortgage and around £ 500 month on credit cards just pay the minimum payment it's madness I know

So I need to face up and contact Credit Card and Mortgage to advise them of my situation

What I am looking for is advice what options do I have I feel if I open up to my creditors I become vulnerable but I can't keep it a secret for much longer.

  • Probably best to head over to the DFW boards - they'll be able to give you more all round advice than on here. Oh, and you may want to reduce the font a bit to make it easier for people to read.

    Good luck.

Yup, that's what I'd do. (Perhaps the mods will move the thread.)

Incidentally Housing Benefit doesn't apply to owner-occupiers.
  • thanks just posted on DFW and reduced text sorry ! also re housing benefit I meant assistance with paying rates
