Advice on Finding a job

Hi

I have just left the army and now looking for a job. I would mind what job i get as i have a lot of debt to pay off. I was thinking about working in a shop. I am going to start handing my cv out to all the shops in my area and i was wondering if i should write a covering letter to go with it. Obviously i cant put individual shop addresses on it as i don't know how many shops or what shops im going to hand them into. You could say im just having a browse.

I was wondering if this was good idea and also what other ideas people might have.

Thanks

  • Firstly good luck in your search and secondly when screening application forms for interviewing despite no 'retail' experience i usually always progress people that have been in the Army to the interview stage - I have had several employee's taken on with an Army background be promoted into Management positions.

A CV and covering letter is a good idea however before applying see if the shop's you are applying for have application forms - Many will prefer you to fill out their application form rather than send in a CV.

  • i do have some retail experience but the problem is searching for jobs as most companys just advertise them on their or in the shops. I looked on the internet at the job centre plus website but they don't seem to be advertising many big company shops. Do you think it is worth calling a few shops and asking if they have any vacancies. I did want a job in a toy shop as i have childcare experience and know all about what developement skills certain toys help improve.

Sadly there are not that many toy shops about. You could apply to some of the dept stores (you would need to look on their websites though for jobs) as they may have toy sections - I know that John Lewis does for sure. Someone I know works at a John Lewis store and he started out working in toys, then he progressed to luggage and now he works in menswear which is where he wanted to be in the first place.
  • As ex forces you may get access to ELCAS which is the MOD's Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Scheme. It provides funding for Higher Level quals (Level 4+). Could be worth a look, see if there is anything you could do for self development & lifelong learning.
