Manchester Hotel & Taxi advice

I need a hotel for 1 night in Manchester mid Sept 2011 Weekday.
I've narrowed down my search to 4 options, but having not been in Manchester for years I could do with some advice or recommendations.
I'm attending an event near Princess Street in the centre.
Hotels I've found are:
Travelodge Blackfriars Street
£29 a night in advance, 0.7 miles from the venue.
Travelodge Upper Brook Street
£23.50 in advance, 1.2 miles from the venue.
Holiday Inn Express Oxford Road
£48.75 in advance, 0.3 miles from Venue
New Union
£40 pay on arrival, couple of seconds to venue.
Does anyone know how much taxi's are in Manchester ? How much should I expect to pay if I was staying in one of the Travelodges ?
I'll be on foot so the best overall hotel budget wise and being realistic about getting back to the hotel in the evening, to station and from train station (Piccadilly).
Any help would be appreciated

During the day there are free shuttle buses around the city centre, so it might be worth taking this into consideration when chosing a hotel in order to save money getting to and from Piccadilly

The metrolink stops on Brook Street (if i remember correctly), so you can hop on that to Piccadilly and taxi prices are pretty standard as it'll probably be a black cab (so leave your kidney's in a bucket for them)0
