When to start applying for jobs at uni?

Hey, I'm off to Aberystwyth at the end of September and will be quitting my job here; I'd ideally like to get a job in Aberystwyth to help fund my studies and I'd like some advice when's the best time to apply. I was going to start applying for jobs about 2 weeks before I go, but I'd like some advice.

I'm doing a science course but I won't know my exact timetable and how many hours I'm studying for until I enrol. Also before anyone asks, I can't keep my job because its in London and its a minimum of 2.5 days a week monday - saturday.

  • My son goes to uni in September too but has been lucky as the company he works for is able to transfer him to where he is going, but his university does have someone there who will help students look for work. You could see if your university has someone and contact them. I would imagine tho the sooner you start looking the better as there will be competition for jobs?

My uni does have a form of careers advice so I'll try and contact them on Tuesday.

I've been looking at jobs available on the job centres website and I was worrying slightly about applying too early because I can't really get up for interviews too easily.

Hi, my daughter has the same problem. She thought about applying a couple of weeks before she moves in. How about applying for the Christmas jobs at Argos and boots for example. I don't think they will start the interviews until September.

    Good luck

I would apply for christmas jobs, but I'm hoping to be at home over Christmas rather than in Wales; although they'd be great for when I get home potentially.

You most probably won't be able to one at home as you'll need to be home from november onwards. And you won't be able to have one at uni and go home... as you'll need to work.

Thanks for that, maybe temp jobs when I go home would be a better option as I really would prefer to spend my holidays with my family, friends and boyfriend rather than living at uni for the full year, at least in my first you.

What do you think about applying about 2 weeks before I go?

It's all well and good until you get asked for interviews and have to go up.....

Theres this which is part of the university website which maybe useful.

Before I went to uni I was working at Dominos and went back the first summer to help out and earn some cash.

Think I should show this to my son...he's about to start 2nd year of his uni life in Manchester, never got a job last year, said he couldn't find one! He has a flat in the city so has been there all summer - his dad is only a short train ride away, I'm about 40 mins drive so he diesn't need to take time away to stay with us - and he still hasn't got one. I did point out he should take the chance when last year's lot had left, were away for the summer but he won't get off his backside. Aaarrrggghhh!!

There's an advert for a cleaner at Aberystwyth Uni here: http://www.aber.ac.uk/en/media/RH.11.18-EXT.pdf

A bit more than minimum wage, unlikely to clash with lectures I'd have thought (no point cleaning uni buildings when they're full of students!) and no travel time!

    Or there's this:

    http://www.aber.ac.uk/en/student/student-ambassador/apply/

I was a student ambassador when I was at uni (not Aber though) and while it wasn't a regular income, they paid well for the work, every little helps and its a great way to meet people.
