Can a travel company take money from me 2 years after my holiday?

Hi all,
I went on holiday in July 2009. I received a letter from the company Holidaynights.co.uk today to say they forgot to take payment of £249 from my account for the accomodation we booked and will be debiting my account in 14 days
Can they do this?
I don't have my bank statements to check if the money was taken and so also can't prove if they did take it!! I genuinely didn't realise if they didn't take the money at the time
Either way, can they just write to me and say they are going to take the money 2 years on???

Assuming you didn't pay it at the time, they are entitled to the money - whether it was your mistake, theirs, or someone else's, there is no getting away from that.
Whether they are entitled to just take it is another matter0 -
Well, they aren't 'just taking it', they've given 14 days notice. I'm pretty sure they will be allowed to do this, but the advance warning does give the OP time to check whether they did or didn't pay it 2 years ago - not having bank statements shouldn't be an issue, either check online or ask the bank for copy statements.0

Can people really take money from you (even with 14 days notice) just like that???
That cannot be right can it? If they didn't get their money, for whatever reason, surely it is so long ago that that is their loss and they should just live with it !0 -

If you found out a company had overcharged you by several hundred pounds in 2009 would you request a refund or just accept it?0 -
contact your bank, they will be able to go back and tell you if the money was taken... if the money was not paid in 2009, i would write a letter stating you cannot make a payment in full and ask if you could set up a direct debit of £50 per month......0

Do businesses have to do annual accounts, if so how come it has taken two years to come to light?0

They've got 6 years to claim itDo businesses have to do annual accounts, if so how come it has taken two years to come to light?
Yes - but it can take some time to finalise them. Maybe that's what uncovered the problem.0 -
People really should check they're statements0

You need to call your bank and find out if the money was originally paid. Also check any receipts or invoices you may have.
The company can take money they are owed.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0 -
I would also write to them disputing it and ask them to give details and dates they have received payments to justify this sum. You can then reconcile this with records your bank can supply and pay it if it is owed.0
