Signing On

What do you do when you know you have been to the job centre and signed on but they say you didnt turn up therefore your benefit has been cancelled?
My husband went to his usual fortnightly appointment where a young advisor had to keep asking another member of staff for help. He also saw another advisor 2 hours later for advice on self employment and relevant grants ( we have the written notes given to us at that meeting)
Two weeks later we receive a later saying his benefit has been cancelled because he didnt turn up on the relevant day. He has since been able to re-sign on but in the mean time we are out of pocket by 4 weeks money which although not a lot is certainly earmarked for our rent. It has also seriously messed up our claim for council tax relief.
It would appear 'the computer says no' and thats it !

I hate the job center. Every time your hubby signs on he has to sign a card which has the date on it, and then they put that information in the computer. Phone them up or go to your local job center and ask them to check this, and explain it was a useless advisor your bubby dealt with. The people in the job center are so rude and unhelpful, if that doesnt help, try phoning the main office. Hope this is of some help x

He needs to appeal. I had to appeal once because they made an error and couldn't seem to correct it without my appealing. He should have had an appeal form with the letter telling him he wasn't getting money.

Exactly what this poster has said. If your hubby has his card (which he should have if he's still signing on) then you can dispute it.

From memory, you sign a card which the JC keeps, and they sign your booklet where you list the job hunting you've done that fortnight. If that's been signed then you've got proof.

maybe the advisors are rude in your JC but the 1 i go they are helpful and not rude, i admit the guy who i see at the podium can be a moody git but the advisors i see are fine. I can imagine they do get alot of people a bit irate who didnt get paid they're allowance.
  • Apart from the security staff the JCP offices I visit are staffed by people who have to put up with a lot for not much money and seem to be able to do it (usually) with a smile and friendly word for those who are interested.

when people sign they are supposed to do the biz on the computer confirming it. if they dont then you dont get paid even though you have signed. this happened to me once. the person taking the signature obviously cocked up. all it should take to sort out is a call to the benefit helpline who will then get it checked out by someone at your jobcentre. they will then call back to confirm either way. they will then organise a payment for you. always ask for a same day payment if they dont offer. if its late in the day it could be the next day you get paid but thats better than waiting another 3 days.

Did he not query it with the Jobcentre when he didn't get paid three days after signing?
"You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "
  • Like othters have suggested it could be that the computer wasn't updated to show that you have signed. If you did sign the "470" needs to be updated. Once this has been updated the Benefit Delivery Centre can fasstrack an internet payment.
