Wales is on your doorstep, there are some lovely sites there, with lakes or beaches.

Shropshire itself is fantastic, and you have the River Severn, Ironbridge Gorge. I don't know of any particular sites but if you google you should find something.

The AA have a fantastic camping search engine, we found a lovely site in Norfolk through it.

I wouldn't go to far afield (excuse the pun) on your first trip because you'll want to get used the equipment, so I think you're doing it the best way, i.e. not to far and not for too long :)

A lot will depend on activities, do you all like walking, history, views or swimming? You need to think about what you'll be doing and this will help chose somewhere. You will want things to do in case it's wet and things to do if the weather is good, so make sure that you have places to visit nearby.

    Hope this helps.

  • You could consider the Llwyngwern riverside campsite beside the Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth if that's the sort of thing the boys/you might be interested in. [Extra cost for CAT might not be what you have in mind, though].

You're also only 9-12 miles from the beaches at Aberdyfi and Tywyn for your second day out.

Or you can walk along the lake at Tal y llyn, or visit the (free) castle ruins at Castell y Bere, or explore the market town of Machynlleth, or visit Ynyshir nature reserve where Springwatch was filmed this year, or ...
... no shortage of things to do ... better make it more than 2 nights (or perhaps not first time ... come back instead ...)!
