    If he had it in a 5.5% account then they'd probably be asking at that rate.

    How about agreeing say paying back a flat rate of a tenner or £20 per month on top of the principal - the faster you pay it off the better for everyone, but he is getting similar interest to the bank, improving as the principal is repaid, but it is easy to account and administer, and allows a little leeway when the base rate changes too.
