Lost our cat after 15 years

On Friday we had our beloved cat put to sleep and even with having 2 other cats and a dog at home, 3 semi feral cats, a pony and a rabbit, we have a big gap that has been left.

He developed a lump which we found a few weeks ago and took him to the vet. The location of the lump, his age and size (always been very slim) the vet said they could do tests etc but where it was located, it would be very risky, long recovery and no guarantees. So we decided to not operate and let him live his life with quality and when that quality went downhill and he started to suffer, we would let him go to the rainbow bridge.

On Monday he started to be sick constantly, couldn't keep food down but so hungry, so catch 22. We got some different foods for him and some prawns etc. He was still running round like he was 6 months old, very cuddly, purring constantly and just very very affectionate like he always was.

But by Thursday he lost weight, the lump had grown to the size of a tennisball (you couldn't see it as it was between his backlegs in his tummy) and he just couldn't keep anything down so we booked him in for Friday morning.

It was the worst experience I ever had to go through. Our 10 yr old DD was heartbroken, like we all were/are but for a child it seems so much worse.

He'll never be forgotten, always in our hearts. RIP Kieran xx

  • Awwww hun, so sorry to hear this:cry: (((hugs))) to all, with an extra special squeeze for your DD.

It's the worst part about sharing our lives with the wee ones, they never stay long enough.

It will get easier and you will remember the good times that you had, please take some comfort in that he was able to enjoy life up to the end and didn't go through lots of treatment which is often stressful and painful and buys not much extra time.

RIP Kieran, run free at the bridge with your new friends.

Oh, it's the worst thing - losing your beloved pets! Still, I think you did the right thing not putting him through tests and things. He did live to a good age of 15 and had a very good life by the sounds of it and enjoyed running around almost to the end. He can't have wished for more.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. He has left a big void even with 2 other cats and a dog at home and a friend who is a manager at a residential carehome, where a stray cat has decided to move in a few months ago (and they have hung up posters, got her checked for microchip, registered her lost etc) has just had a litter of 6 kittens.

So we are going to have a look and maybe pick 1 or 2 to join our home when they are old enough.

OH and I have spoke about it and we know we will never replace Kieran but we need something else to concentrate on. (we were talking about adopting some more rescue cats a few months ago but never took it any further) If we do get 1 or 2 kittens, we will pay to have the mum spayed. The care home just paid £90 for a vetbill for the mum cat as she had a bad infection. The mum cat decided to move in with them and the residents all have a new lease of life with her around and they are going to get her microchipped and registered to them, plus have her vaccinated etc.

we never replace our furry friends, but i like to think that we make room for another one in our hearts and each has a special place and will never be forgotton.
Cats don't have owners - they have staff!! :D:p

  • Really sorry to hear that you lost your beloved kitty. It's one of the worst decisions we have to make & unfortunatly I am currently in that situation myself.

I hope you can hang on to the good memories of your time together & that those memories bring comfort & make you smile.
