Hi all
After an accident 10 days ago during my visit to Hospital this morning the Doctor has literally just told me "Your wrist is badly broken in multiple places. You need an operation within 7 days. You cannot go on holiday". However, travelrepublics' T & C's on their site say if you cancel you forfeit 100% of the costs. This seems grossly unfair considering it is a medical emergency! Any ideas what we can do? We are willing to accept a credit note and use it for a holiday at XMAS or next year.
Help required urgently, because tommorow is 14 days! Which is a critical term in their contract!

Isn't that what travel insurance is for - its not unfair at all - TravelRepublic are unlikely to get another person to fill the seat on the plane and hotel rooms that they will already have contracted for, so they will have to pay with no income unless they keep your payment.Adventure before Dementia!0

You can cancel and claim on your travel insurance.
If you haven't got travel insurance it's grossly unfair for you to expect anyone else to pay for your losses.0 -
Agree. Hopefully you booked your holiday more than 10 days ago and also took out travel insurance more than 10 days ago. If the answer to either of these questions is NO then 'go straight to the silly corner and loose your money', if the answer to both questions is YES then 'you did the correct thing and you need to claim off your insurance (thats what its for)'.WestonDave wrote: »Isn't that what travel insurance is for - its not unfair at all - TravelRepublic are unlikely to get another person to fill the seat on the plane and hotel rooms that they will already have contracted for, so they will have to pay with no income unless they keep your payment.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

As already said, that's why you buy insurance. If you don't have any specific policy, worth seeing if it's included in something like your house insurance (my house policy throws it in for free) or it's covered by your credit card, if that's how you paid.

OK, thanks to all the smart Alecs for your comments such as 'Go to the silly corner' etc. I have a good sense of Humour, but at this time I am not very happy, because it appears I amsat looking at a £1,000 loss. For all those people who would like to help, here are some more facts. And before anybody else calls us stupid etc, we are aware etc.
My partner booked 5 flights and seperately a Hotel for 5 on her C C.
She has just phoned travelrepublic who told her that we have forfeited the £1000 for flights, although we haven't actually paid for the Hotel yet, so that's a Bonus!
The facts are these:
My partner has independant travel insurance for her and her 3 kids.
I normally arrange my own insurance but stupidly thought not to renew it when it ran out in February this year. My thinking was, I'd just start it from the day before I go away, which would mean the insurance would run for 12 months from when she booked it, hence 12 months cover. My reasoning was, what was the point in starting insurance in Feb when I don't travel until Late August.
Yes, I know I have been stupid...
It now transpires travelrepublic told her "Look, all we can do is cancel your flights. They are non refundable"
I say again, yes, I have been silly etc, and made mistakes.
I would just like somebody to answer without taking the P***.
Seeing as it was my Partner who booked these flights and she WAS FULLY INSURED, can she claim on her insurance?
She is gonna try her Credit Card Company. Does anyone have any experience of this?
Basically, travelrepublic refuse to talk to me because my Partner Booked the flights. Now, if they insist that it is her booking, then surely she can claim on HER Travel insurance? Am I right in saying this?
I could do with some URGENT advice seeing as the 14 day period is tommorow (Wednesday).
Thank you in advance to all the genuine peeps who can offer advice.0 -
So you are'nt liking what you are hearing/reading well im sorry to say you have'nt got a leg to stand on.
You mention that your partner is "fully insured" this means that he/she may well be able to claim for her/his flights however is there a reason they cant go on holiday?Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
If the flights are changeable, perhaps change them to a later date.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

There are any number of reasons why you may have needed to cancel your holiday before you were due to travel; unfortunately for you, you have found this out the hard way. Don't try and blame Travel Republic in this instance.0 -
You have learned the hard way, the reason that one should take out insurance when booking the holiday, not the day before you go.
How can your partner claim on her insurance she could still go, the only thing stopping you going is your broken wrist and you are not covered.
IMO your CC company will not help. Why should they?
Why not let the rest of the family go and just lose the cost of one flight, or as posted have you asked if the flights can be put back to a later date?0 -
Does your partner have the terms and conditions of her travel insurance? She may be able to claim for herself and her children (although obviously not for you) as some insurances cover illnesses/injury to a partner/travelling companion but I think it depends on the company and the exact wording. She's probably better off speaking to the insurer directly before going down the credit card route, or getting the policy out and reading the small print to see what it says. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0
