Stage I

I want a combi, because I can only afford a two bedroom flat.
A cylinder means I lose half the 2nd bedroom.


Stage II

I want a system boiler, because I have an irrational fear of leaks created by a series of cheap plumbers who can't weld to save their lives.

Stage III

I want an open vented system, because I now understand pressure relief valve, expansion vessel, filling loop and a pressurised cylinder are just extra expenses because I had an irrational fear of a loft tank leaking. Put a tray and water alarm under it, and insulate the loft tank, and it's far easier to maintain.

Stage IV

I want a thermal store with multiple inputs and outputs to keep my options open. Multiple heat sources also means I can keep warm even when the gas boiler dies.

Stage V

A custom designed heating system that incorprates solar power, heat recovery ventilation, heat pump, solid fuel, and every good idea you can think of, because you can afford £50,000 on indulging your Eco-conscience, so you end up saving £400 a year.


Stage VI

Nirvana. You build a Passiv Haus for £500,000 and never need to spend a penny on heating again. Assuming you save £1,000 on heating a year, payback in 500 years.
