It seems to have calmed down a bit in London. I think the rioters and looters are too busy watching their new Plasma tellies and playing with their new I phones.:D

    I would go.

Hi, and thanks to everyone who replied. We didn't go. Yesterday afternoon I did a bit of ringing round, and a massive thumbs up to East Coast trains who have allowed us to alter our bookings, free of charge, to a later date - even though we had booked their cheap, non-transferable seats. Unfortunately we have lost our Travelodge money as they won't do the same. That's fair enough I suppose - we had booked Saver rates and it isn't their fault we haven't gone.

Ironically it seems much quieter down there today, whereas we live near Manchester! But I think the kids (particularly our daughter who tends to be a bit nervy anyway) would have felt uneasy there at the moment and is happier just staying home.

Thanks again for all your input x

Hi, I was just coming on here to ask advice on the same dilemma, myself, my mother and 8 yo daughter a going to London next Thursday, we are staying in at the Ramada in Ealing and have got tickets for a show in the West End on Thursday evening and were intending getting the tube back - any thoughts on whether we should risk this or not ??? My daughter has seen the news and is absolutely terrified - couldn't sleep last night as she was scared - we don't get this sort of thing happening in sleepy Norfolk!! - Any advice appreciated

if this is still going on next week, time for all of us to buy tinned food and hide indoors!

today, everything has been fine. people just want to get back to normal. the west end didn't get any real damage so should be fine.

for now, it all looks quiet and i'd say don't cancel. most people in London are going to work as normal, even if that work is in a 'hot spot'. just try to calm your daughter down and perhaps try to limit what she sees of the news if she's getting upset.

give it a few days and all should be completely quiet.

  • I was also planning to go with my kids on Friday, but have postponed.
I have a friend in London and they have reported last night that Whiteleys in Queensway has been looted and is boarded up in places. Westbourne Grove, also in W2 has seen looting too. There have been two occassions they know of where tourists have been mugged in Queensway. This is vague info and heresay I know, but it has certainly made me delay my trip.

My son lives down there and told me that apart from a some extra police on the streets and some distant smoke he hasnt seen anything much happening :) He did say his drive to work (near Ealing) was much quicker today as people may be staying away. If you are going to be in central london I dont think you need worry too much.

Come on, who do you think you are, Americans?

    How pathetic can anyone get?

I am going to London next week and it would take wild horses to stop me!

Found this, which might be of interest to anyone going ahead with plans for their London trip this week. Zoom in on the area near to where you are visiting, hover or click for details. HTH

The City of London Police are trained to deal with terrorist threats and incidents, they are there to protect Buckingham Palace and the Royals, Westminster and Mps, there is no way the rioters would get near the city and they know it, they will stay on the outskirts, the dark and dingy corners.
    Queensway is not Central London.
