The annual heritage offerings of free visits is on in September again this year.
England's weekend is 8 - 11 Sept:
http://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/
Scotland & Wales have free doors open events weekends throughout the month:
http://www.civictrustwales.org/ehd/
http://www.doorsopendays.org.uk/opendays/
This also applies to Northern Ireland and the rest of Europe:
http://www.coe.int/t/dg4/cultureheritage/heritage/EHD/default_en.asp
Travel adds to the cost, but worth looking in your local area or wherever you happen to be as you can get free entry to places that normally charge. Some places open up specially for the event - others put on a little something extra.

I'm a little disappointed that English Heritage are a main player in these Heritage Days yet none of their properties in my area are included in the Heritage days, yet the National Trust flagship properties are.0

this needs bumping in case it gets lost, as most years i only find out after the event
thanks edda0 -
I've been asked to run a few Heritage Open Day events in the past and just remember that because it's free it can be overwhelming on the volunteers who freely give up their time to run these events. In the past despite making bookings we still had people turn up with friends, unsuitable children etc in tow and start arguments about their rights. The man without a signature.0

It's this weekend, so thought it worthy of a bump0

There is a reminder in this week's MSE newsletter.
I think it was in last week's too.
Here is more detail.0 -
I had intended to visit Bletchley Park, but upon looking at their website, they are only allowing free entry if you live in Milton Keynes ( proof of address is required )!
This seems a bit unfair. If all the other venues took the same approach, then I'm sure there would be lots of complaints.
Looking at the English Heritage website, their number 1 policy is "Provide and encourage opportunities for all to access, understand and enjoy the historic environment.".
Maybe they need to add a bit along the lines of ".. unless you want to go to Bletchley Park, where they're a bit more fussy on who they let in" !!!0 -
Just bumping this again. Have a good weekendI :heartpuls M.S.E.
