beginner ebay question

I'm about to list something on ebay for the first time and I'm not sure about something and was hoping someone could help (haven't managed to figure it out myself)....

If I estimate postage and packing and offer payment by paypal for a courier delivery, could I also note in the listing that I'd be prepared to accept cash on collection (but not paypal on collection) if the buyer contacts me?

If I'd listed as paypal payment on courier delivery and a buyer got in touch saying they want to do cash on collection, is there a particular process I'd have to go through?

I don't want to leave myself open to fraud (I've seem a few articles advising against paypal payments for collected items) as it's quite an expensive item.

Thanks.

Yes you can do that. When you get to the postage section of creating the listing. You can add "Collect in Person" as another postal service.

No procedure to do with a Cash on Collection other than count the money. The articles about accepting Paypal for collect in person are valid. HOWEVER I will make this one point. Many people who want to collect want to pay on Paypal because they want to put the purchase on their credit card. If this is the case, print out a Collection Receipt. Get them to bring their driving licence, put down the driving licence number on it and get them to sign it, give them a copy and keep a copy. That way you have proof they have collected it.

You are not allowed to put Cash on Collection in the auction description so put "CoC". I always put a line in mine which says:

Payment by Bank Transfer, Postal Order, Paypal or CoC. Delivery by 24hr Courier, collection in person welcome.

I have yet to have someone ask what CoC means.

Hannyman, this is a new seller so I think your advice should be explained further to avoid problems.

OP, you will lose a paypal claim for INR or for fraudulent use of a card if you allow paypal on collection, a signed receipt by the Pope himself won't help, paypal are quite clear about tracking to point of delivery with a signature available online for seller protection. Many experienced sellers, and I include Hannyman, will have their own processes for identifying a buyer and taking full ID details so that is they do end up refunding a buyer via paypal they can go to smallc laims and try and get their money back that way. This might be more trouble thna it is worth though for a smaller or newer seller.

You also cannot insist on cash on collection, you cannot even say you prefer it but it is quite OK to offer it on your listings. However as your item can be posted you can set the auction up as a postage only auciton but state in the auction somehting like 'I may be prepared to allow collection if this is arranged in advance, please ask before bidding' and then you can say you expect cash. If anyone pays via paypal though you must post item.

    Thanks for your replies guys.

I think I'll include the phrase 'I may be prepared to allow collection if this is arranged in advance, please ask before bidding' in my listing.
  • Cash on collection is fine, but not paypal and collect
Don't estimate postage, work it out
Cash on collection, just arrange to meet the buyer, you don't even have to let payapl know, just mark as paid afterwards in my ebay
