Holiday cancelled due to company selling the property we rented

I booked an apartment in Pollensa through a local company (uk registered) in October, I paid the deposit and final payment as required. last week I realised I had not had any confirmation of the holiday and when I contacted the agent I discovered that the property had been sold so was no longer available. The agent offered to try to find us alternatives and came up with 2 properties that were not of equal quality. We found one of almost equal quality one but it was more expensive than the original holiday. Is the agent liable to return just the funds or should he be expected to pay for like for like accommodation?
