Cancel Fitness First membership - 1 months notice

I went into Fitness first to cancel my membership after being with them for at least the 12 month contract term. They stated that I had to give them one months notice to cancel and that I would still be charged on September the 1st for that months membership. Now I'm not even going to be living here in September and as far as I'm concerned cancelling today (1st August), should be enough notice, it is after all over 30 days away to 1st September. Do I have a leg to stand on if I just cancel my dd and refuse to pay for September?

usually it's at least one month's notice, so if they want to be strict, you should have told them by yesterday......it's harsh but if it is in the T&Cs, then it's up to you to follow them (although check exactly what you signed). you could try to speak to them about it but if you just cancel the DD you risk them aggressively hounding you for the money. very few people win in a stand off with gyms!
