I'm with M&S too, they were also fine about insuring my dog (who is a rescue, and 2 years old when I got him) despite having no medical history for him. They just accepted a vet check for him, which other insurers wouldn't do.

Whoever you pick, just make sure it isn't underwritten by E&L, they have a terrible reputation.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

M&S - everyone I know with them has never had any problems getting paid out.

I have just bought an M&S policy for my Labrador puppy- they seem to be the best value for money IMO. It is £19 a month but that's for £7k vets bills per condition and no excess. They also have loads of extras such as cover for special dietary foods and accidental damage to your home amongst other things. I spent a good couple of days researching before I took the plunge.

I just took a look at M&S and RSPCA - they both seem to be underwritten by AXA. Still gave different quotes and policies though!

One of the things I did as part of my research was to find a chat forum about my breed and see which was recommended, as I knew they would have similar needs to mine.

we are with pet plan for our British Shorthair cat and have the top level of cover with them. It is brilliant - he has had quite a few things wrong with him and we have unlimited vets bills so we never have to worry - think its about £13 per month but is worth every penny. The vet sends the form off to them and they cheque comes through within a couple of weeks. We don't have to do anything apart from sign the form.

Do seriously think about insurance for your pet - he might be healthy now - but you never know!
  • From experience it's not just about the cheapest insurance. Look out for time limits or payment limits on the policy. When my cat was diagnosed with diabetes I discovered that my insurer would only pay for treatment for 1 year.

Also check what kind of dental cover is included as this is often excluded.

I am with Tesco's and they have a 1 year limit on paying treatment costs and do not cover dental problems. I was looking at moving to More Than before the Diabetes as I had been advised the cover was much more comprehensive.

  • I can also highly recommend M&S. Our JR Terrier was rescue when we got him 3 yrs ago, and they were quite happy that we could only give an approximate age of 6yrs. We found out in November he has Leukaemia and our claims amounting to £2350 have been settled without any excess stopped. The claims are still continuing, I fill in the form and within 2-3 wks I receive the cheque. The cancer care unit where he is being treated said M&S are probably the best company for paying out at the moment. Our premium is £14month. I could get a cheaper policy but the excess free allows you to claim for all the minor trips to the vet which can also add up.

I'm with Tesco for our springer spaniel, never had a problem making a claim but they are one of the ones who exclude previous conditions or only pay out on long term conditions for a maximum of 12 months (so if it's for life like diabites then again you're stuck after 12 months). He's too old for me to change now or I would switch to pet plan, they seem to be the only ones who really understand vet fees & animal illness etc IMHO. Next time I'll go with them regardless of the cost.
