Tax return

Hi all,
My story - bankrupt on 7th April 2010, nil tax code with payments to Moon Beever from about October, auto discharge on 7th April 2011 and automatically back on regular PAYE tax code. Now I have recieved a tax return form in the post and I'm not sure what my next step is. Obviously according to HMRC records I didnt pay any tax for several months and they want to know what's going on.
My query - do I actually have to do the tax return, or do I contact HMRC to explain I was on nil tax to to BR? If the former (which I assume) what do I actually put on the return? Do I need documentary proof from the OR or Moon Beever about the tax equivalent that I paid them every month? Finally, does this mean I am in the frame for tax returns every year from now on (seems like once your name is on the list it takes a long time for them to let you off again)?
Thanks as always for any info you can provide.

Hi, I am in the same boat! BR 25th May 2010, AD 25th may 2011, with Nil tax code until discharged etc etc, and I received a Tax Return too!

I have been told that this is just coincidence that I have recieved one as apparently HMRC randomly send them to people every year?!

Not sure if this is correct, but I'm going to complete it online and submit then see what happens!!

When you have nil tax code the missing tax is counted as a debt to the tax office. When you complete the tax return for year in which BR occured the tax office file a claim which is included in the BR as a debt. I had to do this recently then recieved a bill for the money which was sent to moonbeaver. After a call to the office told it was just proceedure and my file was marked with the BR and I shouldnt hear from them again. On the tax self assessment letter I recieved it did say if it was a result of BR not to complete the tax return online so might be worth checking before you submit.

Many thanks Marmalady, that's extremely helpful. I didnt get any kind of letter with my tax return, just the form with my details scrawled on in biro so no guidance from them. Normally I like to do things online but I will take your advice and fill in the form instead as there is a mysterious "BY" or "B4" (cant tell which) printed in large letters at the top of the front page. Maybe this alerts them to my status.
