fed up with ebay - receiving funds from abroad

Hi all.

it seems like all the pants buers are coming out of the woodwork to bid on my stuff at the moment.

on my personal account, i have a european buyer who says they do not have paypal and can they have my bank details.

am i right in assuming it will cost them a lot of money to transfer funds from abroad - plus i will require some extra banking codes?

or is there another way?

there has been no contact until i emailed after a week and then have since opened a non-payment dispute. i really can't be bothered with them, and they bought four items!

Yes, it will cost them quite a bit but depending on the item and what proportion of the overall cost it represents to them they may want it badly enough that they are prepared to pay those fees.

There's no risk to your money as they can't get at your account to take any money out (except by reading that d*mn Jeremy Clarkson article but even then that is only an example of what can happen, not what will). It is safe for you, which is the main thing, and won't cost you the Paypal fees. They can't charge it back or open a dispute with any surety of winning, though of course you still have the same responsibility to them if your item doesn't arrive - fair is fair.

European buyers use bank transfer as a matter of routine and on some sites (though not the French or Dutch sites, which now require their sellers to offer Paypal) it's "the done thing".

If they bought four items off me I'd be falling over myself to get their money, to be honest. If you offer your items overseas but don't go through with the sale, you will be in danger of poor feedback and non-performing seller disputes, so even if the money doesn't tempt you, that might.

thanks. think i will give them all the details and let them make the decision to pay or not when they see how much it will cost.

If you can explain that they should pay in euros and select 'shared charges', it's the cheapest method.

They'll need your bank name, sort code, account number and IBAN number which you should find on your statement or ask your bank. A lot of european buyers are used to paying this way and for you it's actually safer than Paypal.

I like the way ebay/payal brainwashes sellers into thinking that free and non reversable bank transfers are actually a worse option than paypal.

it's not that - i just have a feeling that this person is unlikely to pay full stop, especially when they realise what it will cost them on top. but i'll give it a few days to see.

meanwhile, another buy has told me that work have not paid them and can i either sell the item to someone else or wait until the 21st for them to pay me:mad:. thing is, don't they realise i check their feedback - and they have been buying and paying for more items since! lol oh lol! roll on the 21st:D.

You will need to send them the BIC and IBAN code. It costs them typically €10 to do an IBAN transfer and it takes about 5 working days to be cleared into your account. I have never been charged for receiving IBANs even though mine is a business account.

I've done several over the last few months for laptops and not had a problem other than it takes time but you end up with the money cleared in your bank just a day longer than it takes transferring from Paypal.

My experience of using BIC + IBAN transfers in Euros from the EU (ex UK) is quite different. They are usually free to send (or cost the same as domestic transfers), they are often instantanous, and are free to receive at the better UK banks.

you could ask them to use pppay.com, they're an ebid partner and might work as you don't have to have an account to send money, the fees are small and they send you money to your e-mail
