Basic Bank Account for 15 year old

My 15 year olds have left school and don't turn 16 until next month . One of them has a placement with a training provider for the summer and will receive a payment a week for this . He only has a child bank account with a book . I went in to the branch to see about upgrading to a no frills , no minimum monthly deposit account with a link card but not necessarily a debit card , so he can use machine for cash but not use it to pay . Anyway he has to have a meeting with bank and id for proof of address etc . He has no passport . How can he provide his proof and are there any other providers who will offer the facility I am after without him needing to make appointments ?
Thanks for any help offered .

HSBC have a younger persons account till the age of 17, so he should apply for that, not sure what its like with TSB/BARCLAYS/HALIFAX etc.
as for the 'no id' hmmm well seeing as your his dad, you can help him open an account with the bank your with, (they might have a young persons account under 16's account) or something,
(cash card is what your after) - but why not get a debit card anyway?
what bank you with ?• HSBC (Main A/C)
• Halifax Back up A/C
• Lloyds (Spending) A/C
• RBS Back up A/C
• Barclays Old A/C
• Nationwide Old A/C0 -
Young people can use their birth certificate as ID.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

im 16 years old and I have had at one point or another all posible under 18's accounts...
HSBC-very very good bank, visa debit card, chequebook at 16, online banking, easy deposits in branch, great customer service but your son must have a passport for this account. when I applied I did'nt have a passport (birth certificate) so they turned me away until I got a passport. 3 months later got the account with new passport.
Natwest and Rbs-nat for england and rbs for scotland, both accounts identicle, good service, visa debit, online banking at 16, can't go wrong with it.
halifax and bos-visa electron card, online banking, good service.
lloyds tsb-visa debit, online banking at 16, choice of cashcard instead of debit.
most under 18's accounts are all similarish so you want one close to home for easy access. get your son an account with your bank or one in your town.
birth certificate can be used for indentity for all under 18's accounts except from the hsbc account.
if you tell us who you bank with and what banks are in your/closest town we can give you more detailed information on what accounts are suitable for your son.0 -
Thanks for the replies . I bank with the Yorkshire Building Society with a cash transacter ? account which is what I wanted for him . That is where I went to first as his child bank account is with them but after being told over the phone to go into the branch and switch to one of those I went in and was told to book an appointment and he needed id such as a utility bill !!!
In my town there is a Santander which we then went into but they told us to go to a main branch , and a Nat West who were shut , it was 430 .
Will look more closely at all the accounts you have all listed . I don't really want him to have a debit card so he doesnot get tempted to buy impulse buys online etc until he becomes more aware of money and the value of things .0 -
I have a question regarding young person's accounts.....
If, as the parent, you don't have a good credit rating, would that in anyway impact on the ability for my daughter (aged 13) to get a bank account? Or will it be soley in her name and therefore the bank wouldn't need any of my details?
ThanksSquares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)0 -

The Cash Transactor is not listed as as child account.
The Freedom Account is available for ages 12-20. For a child the acceptable forms of identity are listed here.

the utility bill they want can be under your name. I used my mums council tax bill. 2 years ago I had the ybs freedom account, you get a link cashcard and statements every month. its quite simple but its an easy account to use and run.0 -

your credit rating won't have any impact whatsoever on the accounts your daughter can get now and in the future. the account will be in her name but the bank will need a parents signature and a few details as you can only 100% run an account if your 18 or over. my lloyds tsb account to open required my mums driving license to be photocopied and for her to sign a few documents. you will regularly be informed by the bank your daughter has an account with about changes in the terms and conditions etc. a parents signature is usually enough. if your daughter runs the account well then there will be no problems with the bank. does you daughter have a bank account yet?0 -

If you don't want him to have an account with a debit card and just a cashcard try and get him the freedom account with ybs as its just what you want for him and it will be convenient for withdrawls and deposits as its also your building society. If you can't get that then the lloyds tsb under 19's account with the cashcard would be just as good.0
