web based content on TV

Hi All,
I really hope that someone knows how pressure can be brought to bear on this issue.
All tvs that have web based content needs to include a wider level of functionality. So far I think Sony and Samsung offer the best in this but it still doesn't go far enough.
When will extra items be added to all tvs that can connect to the web such as a file player (or home NAS server) and, say, LoveFilm video on demand streaming?
Other catch up tv offerings (also available on the web) for the UK need to be added for itv and channel 4. Yet C4 say they have no plans to get this added to web-based tvs! This makes no sense because if its there people will use it.
I was convinced at one stage that pressure from Sky was keeping itv and c4 catch up from getting onto web-tvs, but after c4's response they seem to be happy with the current situation, which I find bewildering to say the least.
There are various groups dotted about that plan to write their own firmware to allow virtually anything to be accessed. This is unsatisfactory as most users don't want to fiddle with the software themselves - they want the tv manufacturers to do this for them.
Any suggestions on this would be appreciated.
