They say their Online Energy Saver 14 dual fuel tariff is not affected by their August price rises but it is not a fixed tariff. They said it was a limited time offer tariff.

On their site it says:
No Standing Charge
Guaranteed to remain a minimum 2% cheaper than our standard monthly Direct Debit (No Standing Charge) prices for gas and electricity until 31st August 2012.

Under the Online Energy Saver 14 Offer, your prices are guaranteed to remain a minimum of 2% below ScottishPower's standard monthly Direct Debit (No Standing Charge) gas and electricity prices until 31st August 2012. Please note that your monthly payments may vary depending on how much energy you use.

I asked will the price not increase when their standard tariff increases in August but the CS rep was adamant it would not.

We could save quite alot switching to them from British Gas but only if what they are saying is true.

  • I made the move using SimplySwitch who were offering £40 cashback after 90 days. I confirmed with SP over the phone and also online that the Online Energy Saver 14 will not be affected. I have also received an initial email advising of the progress which also confirms that the tariff will not be affected by the August price increase.
They did however advise that the tariff may change in the future but i worked out it should still be cheaper for me to switch. The worst case is that i pay the same as on my current tariff.

Yes, they wont increase the price in August but can anytime after that.

I have decided it would be best to go for a fixed deal for a few years then see what the market is like.

e.g. Eon fixed price 5 dual fuel is the same price that we pay currently with British Gas, it offers a fixed price till July 2013 and no cancellation charge. £50 quidco cashback too and Tesco culbcard points.

sorry but this isnt correct. they can change the price of individual tariffs when they want as long as they stick to the terms of deal. I believe the same thing happened only a fee weeks ago with an edf tariff (though I cant think of the name)

As above that is incorrect. When the prices increase take place on 1st August OES14 will remain on the old price, it wont go up, but at anytime after they can bring it upto the new August prices, all they promise is the new OES14 price will be a minimum of 2% below the new standard tariff price.

is it too late to switch supplier?
is there enough time to switch supplier?
does the switch have to be before 1st august?

what happens if i tell scottish power that i'm rejecting their price increase, but nothing is done by 1st august? do they switch me to their standard tariff?

can i switch to their standard tariff without being tied in and then continue my search for the best switchover penalty free?

sorry, so many questions! but i'm worried i've left it too late?

The switch doesn't have to be completed by 1/8/11, just started. (You need to tell them you are going, and your new supplier needs to contact them within 15 working days of your notification).
