Sassy GROCERIES Shopping - Sell By Dates & Milk Price

I was so frustrated with my shop at a well known High street Groceries retailer Today Monday 4th Jul 11 that I decided to take the time out of my day to let you Sassy Shoppers know my experiences. As consumers you really do need to shop around if you are similarly experiencing any of the points below. I haven’t named any of the stores – read the experiences and see if YOU shop at the same store !!! Then vote with your feet / cars or other transport to get the competitor’s better deal for their customers.
Use by Dates:
1. TWO Sales/Display trays full of Round lettuce with Tuesday and Wednesday as use by dates - is this the best they can do ? (less than three days - I don't shop at midnight!)
2. Fully skimmed 4 Pint Milk use by date of 10 Jull 11 - I bought some at their competitor's, another different well known store, last Friday (1 Jul 11) and the use by date on theirs is 12 Jul 11 (that’s 12 days Versus 6 and I only need buy 2 bottles at a time to get the same price as large families) !
3. Tomatoes
No idea. The 'on the vine' has no sell by dates; the others were rejected by me on the basis I didn't find them long enough sell by dates. Loose tomatoes,,, two EMPTY trays!
On-line Complaint Forms
Even their form comes up short. 2 of 2 submissions needed to get past the 1000 character limit.
Prices
1. I don’t really call 3 bottles of 4 Pint skimmed milk for £3 a bargain. Especially with the sell by dates they have ? Why is it I can still get 2 bottles for £2 at their competitor's? My ‘Well known’ Store is in an Metropolitan area frequented by older and single people who don't drink that much milk in 6 days. Just what is their policy on this so called bargain (when their single bottle 4 pints milk price is around £1-49 .... also significantly more than their competitor's). I have noticed all these points on Milk for at least the last three weeks!
Come on Consumers. Does this strike an accord with the ‘well known store’ you shop at ? Much more of this and it will serve my purposes to get in the car and go the 4 miles return trip to their competitor's for my convenience store !

just a few things0 -
On the FEW occasions I've been in an M&S's food section, I've noticed that there's a lot of produce with a sellby date of a couple of days in advance.
I have a phobia about out of date food so I always check dates on food." The greatest wealth is to live content with little."

Well the easy one on things like Lettuce is please ignore the 'Sell by' dates...they will not magically turn to mush at the stroke of midnight. Equally the tomatoes...why should they have a 'date' on them?0

Same goes for ANY food. I go by colour, texture, and smell - the faculties we were born with. Things can go off BEFORE or AFTER the use by date, depending on how well they were kept (sealed / refridgerated).0 -
What about the 4 Pint skimmed milk prices Vs Sell By Dates ?
It's 21 Jan 13; 5 months later and the price difference of 18p is still prevalent except in at least ONE well known high street supermarket, which is STILL selling at £1-00 per 4 Pint bottle, 12 Days in advance use by date and an Each bottle price. You don't have to buy in bulk.
I don't think it's appropriate to name names, but you really do need to shop around !The Highwayman0 -
Are you comparing the same products? Milk would typically only have a shelflife of 5-7 days. For it to have a 12 day shelf life it would normally have to be filtered. Filtered milk brands would include Cravendale/Fresher For Longer produced by Arla or Puriti/Tesco Pure produced by Wiseman.
The shelf life of standard milk vs filtered will never be comparable.0
