credit card groupings?

I know some issuers can be grouped together.
For e.g. I've a card with the AA, which is listed as MBNA. When i cancel this, i believe i can't immediately take out another MBNA based card (or not within a certain timeframe). I've recently closed the Tesco card i had & was told something similar.
I've been trying to find what cards are grouped together so i can apply in the right spot, but i can't find anything. Probably because i don't know the correct terminology.
Anyone able to help?
Thanks.
