Was thinking about buying the LG 47LE5900 which is £600 from Richersounds.

Just wondering if a cheap LED is better than an expensive plasma/LCD? Any technophiles care to chime in?
You can get a 50' plasma or 47' LCD for cheaper than that.
Cheers

Ignore the marketing hype it's not LED, it's backlit by LED's.
Go and have look yourself and compare LCD and plasma. it think you will find plasma beats LCD (LED backlit or not) hands down.
This is based on personal experience as I have two Panasonic plasmas and two Sharp LCD's (one LED backlit) so can see the differences.0 -
But you have to consider all aspects. LCD panels don't suffer "screen burn" - a problem that has not been eliminated completely from Plasmas. LCD panels don't produce as much heat as plasmas. (Heating your room via a plasma display may not necessarily be the most efficient way - especially in summer.) LCD panels don't produce as much electrical interference as plasmas. (An oft overlooked "feature" that can cause problems with "magic eye" remote extenders etc.) LCD panels are generally not as heavy as plasmas.
So do compare the two - especially overall picture quality and viewing angle. If you can live with the latter two points from an LCD then that's probably still your best choice.0 -

What I'm wondering is that obviously there are differences between buying a 47 LED for £600 or buying one thats £1600. I'm just wondering for that price range would I be better with a plasma/lcd?Capital One - 950/1400

It's not an LED TV so the argument LED beats LCD and plasma hands down is not relevant. Plasma is a far better picture than LCD. True LED should be better than LCD or plasma but true LED TV's in that size are some way off.glasgowm148 wrote: »What I'm wondering is that obviously there are differences between buying a 47 LED for £600 or buying one thats £1600. Already advised you to go and look for yourself, in my opinion plasma would be a better choice but unless you make the effort you are only going on 'expert' opinion not your own.0 -
Glasgow - you've been reading too much marketing speak!
LED backlit screens ARE LCD screens, with LEDs at the back shining through instead of fluorescent tubes. OLED (Organic) screens are extremely expensive, and you won't find one in your local Currys for a few years yet.
A cheap LCD, LED or Plasma screen will not be as good as an expensive LCD, LED or Plasma.
Let's dispell the old myths - Did you ever get screen burn on your CRT screen? No? Well you won't on a plasma either. I've had no problems with electrical interference with my plasma, and yes they're heavier - that's because they have a glass screen - if you're not going to wall mount it, it doesn't matter. Size for size, I'm not convinced that plasmas give out that much more heat than LCDs.
You're into Panasonic plasma money here. I'd go for a 1080p plasma, but do go and look at screens, and look at the picture, and try to ignore what technology is being used.0 -

I know the difference between LED and OLED I'm just using the term 'LED' because that's what it's know as and it's easier than typing 'LED-lit LCD'
I'm going to the shop on Sat so I will take a look at screens but obviously there is only so much you can tell from a 5 minute preview. Will most likely end up getting a 50' plasma instead, and shell out for a OLED in 5 years time when my warranty runs out. It's not an LED TV so the argument LED beats LCD and plasma hands down is not relevant. Glasgow - yep, you're right but you were being beaten over the head about referring to them as LED, I was explaining for everyone on the thread.
And LED backlit screens DO NOT beat plasma hands down. You'll find that out when you goto look at the screens. Just don't fall for any marketing guff please!
I also think you're being optimistic about buying an OLED (for a reasonable price) in 5 yrs time but now I'm just trying to predict the future!0
