Deferring a year

As previously posted Junior has decided, after choosing his 1st and 2nd choice Unis, to defer entry until 2012.

He's contacted the Unis concerned and they are happy for him to do this providing that he gets the grades requested.

My question is if, in the worst case senario he doesn't get the grades how does it work with a deferment? I mean, in the normal course of events he would go into clearing so would it be the same for someone who wanted to defer a year?

I'm pretty sure that if he didn't get his grades in September then it would just be treated as a gap year - meaning he could just reapply again for the 2012 cycle, either to different unis or he could retake some exams to try and boost his grades. Some unis might be very accommodating and let him in based on what he does in this year off, but it depends on what course he's doing (for example - I study journalism and I know a few people who deferred, missed their grades but were let in the following year providing they got up to 60 words per minute shorthand or got enough experience on a newspaper, so they didn't have to retake anything).

He wouldn't go into clearing I wouldn't think, because clearing is to fill the space they have left over for that year (so, 2011). It's usually very rushed and you don't go through UCAS, so I don't think even if it was possible that he should do that when he would have another UCAS cycle available to him before going to uni in September 2012, if that makes sense?

If he does get the grades he needs then he'll just have an unconditional offer from the uni to start in 2012, which is what happened to me :)

Edit: Just forgot to add that if he misses the offer for his firm university, but meets the insurance university, he'll automatically have an unconditional offer with them for 2012. If he decides that he'd rather retake his exams to try and get into the higher offer university then you have to let the insurance university know so they're not expecting him in 2012 ;)

If he doesn't get the grades he needs to either resit or do a different course if he still wants to go to the same universities. Alternatively he could apply to places with lower standards.

He's going to be a pretty rare creature - a student deferring his place from 2011 to 2012!

Totally agree ONW - can't see many people taking a gap year this year.

The only reason he's able to consider this option is that we live in Wales - he doesn't have an increase in fees to worry about.

Unfortunately his 'insurance uni' are requesting the same grades as his 1st choice so it is really !!!! or bust time

    Aah - Wales!

I don't think he's really grasped the idea of an "insurance offer" has he?

What's the point in having his insurance uni as one that wants the same grades as his firm? If he had gone for an insurance with lower grades,as people generally do,then he probably wouldn't have the hassle of deferring.

    Why did he do that?

He may not have had a choice. When I applied for university my lowest two offers were both BBC and one of them was my 1st choice. I put the other down as an 'insurance' as though if I missed the grades I'd miss them for both, it's always possible that one of two would have let me in anyway after I spoke to them on results day.

Yeh I didn't bother with the insurance option as it was higher than first choice.

Spot on Mrs Manda...he didn't have a choice - his first choice is from the uni that he wanted to attend and his 'insurance offer' is the lowest of the remaining offers .....it just so happens that its the same as his first choice.

The point of deferring is not to do with the grades - its more about buying him some time to see if his first real choice (to get into the Armed Forces) can be achieved.

We know its not an ideal situation - but given the hurdles he had to get over even to get even this far with his application,he felt it was a price worth paying.

Fair enough :) Didn't think of it in that way tbh

Well,at least he's got some options either way then which is always good.Fingers crossed he gets what he really wants to do and if he doesn't it's good that he's got a back up plan -something many don't

tbh I'm not really convinced he wants to go to Uni full stop.

It was only this time last year (when all his problems with his application started running into problems) that prospectuses started falling through the door.

Only time will tell whether his gamble will pay off - though it does mean he has a year to work and save for Uni - or a weekend to end all weekends if he joins the Armed Forces!
