TV licensing

Hi,
I have just bought a new property and as I am a first time buyer I need to buy a tv license. I began purchasing a license from the website and decided to choose a monthly direct debit payment to which an overview of my payment plant was shown. It said that I need to pay £29.10 every month for the rest of this year (totalling the £145 you pay for a years license) then the contract renews in January to begin a new year of paying £12 something every month.
This is very unfair! I should not have to pay a whole years license when I only begin using it from next month! I am paying for a previous 6 months that I did not own a license! Does anyone know if this can be amended? I just assumed that I would begin payment now and this would be renewed this time next year.
Miffed!

This has been raised on many occasions - the way it works is that your first 5 payments cover a TV Licence valid for 12 months until next Summer.
In the New Year you start paying ~ £12 per month - the first 6 months are in ADVANCE for your next licence, you then complete the payment over the following 6 months in ARREARS.
Should you cancel the TV Licence you will receive back monies for the unused portion eg if you cancel before the renewal date you will get back ALL the payments made in advance.0
