Bidding on an item.

Hi, just a quickie, I have used ebay before to buy and sell (tho not for a while, but may list some items this week) I have been watching an item that is oos to buy in retail and keeping an eye on the bidding price. I understand that the bidders max price is private and that ebay auto bid on their behalf when there are other interested bidders, but how can an item go from £3.30 to £8 as there are no other bidders showing in between. Just wondered really as my max bid only intended to be a few quid more as the item listed as used and don't want to go over retail price for this reason, tho the item is a bear dress up item and not for a real person lol. TIA.

    how do you mean?

was the starting price at £3.30 and you bid £10 and it went to £8? or was it bid up to £3.30 and you put £10 in and it went to £8?

if it was bid to £3.30 and you put £10 in then it means the previous high bidder had a maximum bid of £7.50 and you've outbid that

The £3.30 bidder must have bid up to a max of a few pence below your £8 bid, this would bring their bid up to their max & show yours as the high bid.

I haven't put in a bid yet. The starting bid was £2 and has had 7 bids which crept up by 40-50p and then leapt to £8 and then by 1p. I would have thought that if a max bid was £8 for example that ebay would not have had it leap to that straight away or did they perhaps look at the overall bids and the max was £8 at the time, I just thought it would still slowly creep up and this would be displayed.

if the next bid was just below £8 then it'd automatically jump up to the £8
  • The bidding system is confusing.

The highest bid is stored and not displayed until somebody else bids on the item, so if person A had bid £8.01 (a tacktic as you have to bid 50p up and normal people dont bid 51p) you will only see the £3.30. then if you bid £8 the £8.01 will be seen and outbid.

however if there is a reserve the highest bid will be shown to show the reserve has not been met.

The bidding is normally done slowly, however more near the end of the auction people go mad and it shoots up.

When you view the list of bids, there is an option to show automatic bids. That will show you all the 'behind the scenes' automatic bids that have been made to get to the price you can see IYSWIM

I just won my item but while looking to see if there was any discount codes on cb sites i didn't realise I could have had 40% cb too:(

Am now considering wether to bid on the other item too to compare, tho would end up having to put one back on ebay lol.

Also, seller is charging £2 for 2nd class delivery, does anyone think this is a too much, the items are jacket and jeans for a bear.

You don't get 40% cash back, you get 40% of the fees that the seller pays. IN most cases this only amounts to a few pence but does add up if you do it all the time.

For postage, eben if it is less than 100g it will cost them £1.33 + packig so I think this is reasonable.

If the CB site is Quidco i've found you can either click through them to buy/bid and pay
    or
Buy It Now/bid as normal, then open Quidco in another window, go to their Ebay page, click through then pay for the item.... i have always got my cashback doing it either way...very handy as alot of times I forget about Quidco until I go to pay.

Does that make sense? I've got raging insomnia so am probably sleeptyping :o
