Car insurance - Named driver No Claims?

Hi everyone! Desperately hope someone can help me!
Due to the astronomical cost of Car insurance i have been a named driver on a Policy in my Dads name (with my father down as registered keeper on the log book..which i hope is legal!)
I was reading through (on here i think) about a lady who managed to get no claims and that is basically what i am trying to do as i need to get insurance in my name some day, but it is still very expensive!
The post/woman in question had been a named driver on her husbands policy but upon realising that she was driving the car more than her husband they called the insurance company and in the space of a phone call, she went from being a driver with 0 years no claims to a driver with 7 years no claims!
I was wondering if there was any way i could be so fortunate? (i am with More Than) Is it worth giving them a ring or could it make things worse (such as making me the policy holder for being the main driver and charging me an extra arm and a leg!)
Thanks very much in advance for any help you can give me!!!

If you're not careful, you may find the insurer will assume your dad has been fronting for you.0

I suppose in a way i am guilty of that, and i dont intend on hiding the fact. Though i thought fronting was when the Log book was in the named drivers name and not the policy holders. Regardless i have been driving the car more than my dad so either way i am guilty
Do you think More Than would throw the book at me or, in other people experiences are they helpful? Im not looking to get my no claims and bolt, i genuinely would like to stay with More Than but i need to start earning my own no claims
Thanks again!0 -
Op I think that may be my post you are talking about?
If I were you and your Dad is willing to sign the NCB over to you then I would go for it!The loopy one has gone :j0 -
I didn't even know my dad could sign it over..a few questions regarding this:
1: How do i go about this? (does my dad ring up and request?)
2: Will it effect his 30+ years no claims on his own insurance policy?
I desperately hope i am able to do this is some way. I am not a reckless driver, rarely speed and have had a completely clean license since the day i passed my test....it was just the fact that i was a student meant i didn't have the money for my own insurance!!0 -

If you do find an insurer willing to transfer your dad's NCD to you, then he will have none!0 -
My friend's son has been a named driver on her policy for some time. It is the "family" car and is quite a hefty lump (1.9 diesel). He now has is eye on his own car and having shopped around online was being quoted around £900 for insurance so he picked up the phone to them and explained that he had been a named driver and regular user on this policy and hey presto! the cost of his insurance dropped to around £450.
As one small white lie sometimes leads to another, it might be worth ringing "More Than" and telling them that you were thinking of buying the car from your dad and asking how much it would be to transfer the insurance into your name. If it's not cost prohibitive and they agree, you can just get your dad to transfer ownership of the car to you.
I assume your dad has another car which he has his 30-odd years no claims bonus on, if so that will not be affected by any changes to this policy. I have two cars, one with 15 years, one with 3, so assuming your dad has his in similar circumstances, then it would just be the 3 years that came to you, he would keep the 15 (or 30 in his case) on the other car.0 -

The OP's Father I am assuming has another car of his own. The Father has been effectively "fronting" for his son so cant see the loss of the ncb on this car bothering him.The loopy one has gone :j0 -
No-oneknowsme - your post seemed a little judgemental to me. If what i have done offends you then i apologise but i am trying to sort this out. If i have simply mis-interpreted your post then again i apologise
I've never even heard of signing over NCD before. As others have suggested my father has a separate policy on his own car and (if it is possible) i would only be looking to transfer the NCD from the policy on my car0 -

I was actually trying to HELP your situation!
I was trying to point out to Quentin that your father has another policy of his own on his own car and so the loss of the NCB on YOUR car wouldnt bother your dad!
This was my way of saying that you SHOULD attempt to get the policy changed into your name.
But seeing as how you are so touchy I think I will duck out of this thread now!The loopy one has gone :j0 -
I think it has always been possible to transfer bonus from husband to wife, but some insurers now do let named drivers have an NCB if they insure with them, Direct line being one, the power of advertising eh.
I would approach it as per the earlier thread and see what they say. Otherwise you may find some insurers give an introductory NCB anyway if you have been driving over a year with no claims. It used to be about 30% when I worked for a large insurance agent. Which is a while ago, I might add.0
