Beach Holiday of a lifetime within 6 hours flight of my house?

I don't get out much but we have a joint 40th this year and we would like to go on one of those holidays of a lifetime, relaxing on a white beach with a bit of culture thrown in. There's a whole world to play with but I have a young child (7) and I can't imagine spending more than 6-7 hours travelling on a plane. Is there anyone out there who could recommend somewhere to go? We went to Majorca last year but would like to go a bit further afield. We fancied Thailand, Maldives, etc but the flight times are a no-go with the nipper.
Much appreciated for any advice.

I'm sure I went upstairs for some reason.

It sounds like Barbados to me - friendly people, suits any budget, decent flying time and lots of budget options.0 -
Barbados would be absolutely perfect. Is there anyone you can recommend to book through? We're looking at 4 adults and one nipper so would be looking at a villa I guess.I'm sure I went upstairs for some reason.0

I would definitely suggest Barbados too, we only got back from there last tuesday and the beaches are absolutely beautiful. The flight times were great, the flight itself was short and there were lots of kids on our plane. I always think that parents rule out certain places because of their kids but my 3 yr old has been as far afield as Australia, America and has also been to Paris, driving all the way there from Scotland so I would say that kids are pretty resilient and as long as they have things to entertain them then the traveling is part of the trip. My daughter was not with us when we went to Barbados however I noticed that it was a very family friendly Island with plenty of activities for them and the Bajans just love children,. I am hoping to return very soon so my daughter can swim with the sea turtles, a totally unforgettable experience! If you have any other questions about Barbados feel free to ask.0

Sounds perfect. Any recommendations for flights, villas, when to go would be perfect ;-) We would be looking at school holidays so maybe Easter hols 2012 I guess so we can save up for it and hopefully it won't break the bank. We are midlands based so it looks like a flight from London for us.
I really appreciate all the input. It's a big old world so it's always best to listen to the advise of others.I'm sure I went upstairs for some reason.0 -
Just had to join this thread...of all the places I've been it's got to be Barbados. It's amazing and a total holiday of a lifetime.
I flew with Virgin from Manchester - just over 7 hours there and 7 coming back. Flight crew were great and good choice of movies etc. I booked with Virgin and had 'check-in' at the hotel which meant even more time on the beach before having to leave to catch the plane.
I stayed at Sea Breeze on Maxwell Coast and it was lovely. Oh I am daydreaming now....!!!0 -

Virgin do some all-inclusive deals or even flight and hotel alone.
Or you could book a cheaper flight and sort out some accommodation on your own.

As you child is only seven you should try talking to the school and booking just outside the school holidays to get cheaper.0 -
