External Hard Drive Advice Needed

I have a budget PC that suits my basic needs however it is a little short on hard disk space. I have been looking at the various external hard drives on the market and have a couple of basic questions.
Do they operate similar to a memory stick, i.e. you can transfer files directly to them or save files directly to them, or is there a more complicated process involved?
Does anyone have any recommendations for a good value external hard drive, i need approx 100-200GB of space and obviously looking to spend as little as possible.
If it makes any difference all i need the space for is to save mp3 files/photos and movie files.
Thanks

I would recommend that you buy a good brand like Seagate or Western Digital rather than those with unknown drives inside them, like these Seagate ones at Maplin. They operate just like a memory stick. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

do you have room inside your PC case to add an extra internal drive? It would probably work out cheaper doing that and it's straightforward to do.
If it must be an external drive, do as espresso says and get one made by one of the hard drive manufacturers. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
i have a western digital my book and its very good (fast and quiet)
check out https://www.ebuyer.co.uk for a starting guide to prices
it will basically look like a normal harddrive when viewed from My Computer.
internal will be slightly cheaper and quicker but i like having my important files backed up externally!0
