I recent obtain my credit reference file from Equifax, whilst the score was rated as 'good' there was a comment about a 'default'
Looking through the report there is a current debt of £2365 and a Default/Delinquent balance of £3360. The start date was Dec 2000 and I moved from this address around 7 years ago and have received no contact from the company (Cahoot). The account was taken out on behalf of a previous partner.
There is only one year recorded on the payment history and this was 2010 and a default is shown in Sept 2010. The last update recorded on this debt was Mar 2011.
My questions are as follows:
* How can this debt be enforced after so long?
* Why would this have shown as defaulted 10 years after it was taken out?
* Can this be written off and my credit reference be changed?
Any advice/Guidance would be appreciated

You say the account started in December 2000 - when did you stop paying anything towards the debt? If it was a long time ago do you know if a default was originally recorded on your credit file back when you stopped paying/your partner stopped paying?
If you have not paid towards this debt for more than 6years and assuming there is no CCJ then its likely to be statute barred, which means that you wouldn't need to pay it.
If you actually defaulted on the account years ago then you would have to take up the issue with the credit reference agencies and whoever put the default on there (be it the creditor or a DCA) to have it removed as in correct info (I expect this will be a pain to do and take some considerable persistance from you).A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Yes, the account was taken out in 2000 (according to my credit file) and since I have been with my new partner for just over 8 years then I would say, yes to nothing has been paid since then/ There is no CCJ on record nor have I received any communications from them since.
I dont understand why the default notice is shown as Sept 2010 and appears to have been updated in Mar 20110
