I'm planning to transfer my old vhs camcorder tapes to dvd and input to my pc for editing. Can anyone recommend good software (preferably free or inexpensive) for editing the footage?
Any advice appreciated.

If you are using a DVD recorder, you'll need to 'rip' the footage from the DVD to a format that is 'editable' via the computer.0

Hi,
Aldi are selling a Tevion DVD Maker for only £25. Be quick though as they have been on sale for a week and I've been wating 18 months for these to come back into the store
It's a couple of cables and a small box which plugs between your video player/camcorder and PC and has software to convert the tapes to DVD format.
So far I have only put the software on my P.C and it looks good and anybody with reasonable ability should be able to carry out the transfer. Over the next couple of days I intend to start copying.
Good luck.0 -
Thanks binthere - I'd be interested to hear your verdict when you've copied and edited some tapes.
Thanks also don - it sounds complicated. Can you (or anyone) say more to help me to proceed and locate suitable software?
Many thanks.0 -

Because of the way that you worded your request, I assumed that you already had a DVD recorder.
Is this the case?0 -
Hi Donnie - no I don't have a dvd recorder at present so I can either:
1) buy a basic, cheap one just to get my vhs tapes onto dvd (then pc edit).
Editing software then required for my pc.
Could also get a friend (or pay a lab) to copy my tapes onto dvd.
2) buy one with HDD and, hopefully, editing facilities.
If good editing software is freely available, (1) would be cheapest route.0 -
In that case bintheredunthat's suggestion seems the way to go, as it probably comes with editing and DVD creation software.
Otherwise you would still need to convert the DVD created by the DVD recorder into MPEG2 or something similar before you can edit it and then re-create a DVD structure.0 -
Thanks donnie - I'll look into that option.
Sounds like doing it on the pc is more complicated.0 -
Here's a good guide; http://www.videoforums.co.uk/reviews/faq0
