Holiday in London

Hi - We are taking our three kids, 17, 15 & 9 to London over New Year and would like to get advice on how to entertain them - especially the teenagers!! They are disgusted at being dragged away from all the parties - the reason we are dragging them away! I have used my Tesco tokens for Planet Hollywood and the Tower of London, and have splashed out on tickets for the Rocky Horror Show. Through another thread I found the london 2 for 1 offer - that sounds good. Any advice gratefully received. Thank you.

  • Wow! keeping teenagers entertained hey - easy - I'm sure. I'll have a go at making some suggestions. Starting with that old faithful - Tate Modern - which now has a work of art in which you can participate - become a part of a work of art if you like. I am refering to Carsten Holler's work, which you can slide down like a helter-skelter, and it's free; though expect queues.
Next; Covent Garden - touristy, but still fun. The Ice rink at Somerset House, or the rink at Natural History Museum, or the one at Greenwich, or Kew That's enough Ice rinks.
How about going on a Duck tour? This vehicle goes through the streets and then drives down into the Thames, but don't panic - it's amphibious.

Then there's always the Trocadero with all the games, bowling and so on.

The London Eye is a little pricey but is fantastic.

Though you can get a 2 for 1 with an Oyster card:

  • Science Museum has 'Game on' which has the PDP-1 of the 1960s to the latest must-have consoles to play on.

Harrods is a great way to spend a day and is free, you could then head over to Hamleys and down Bond street.

Thanks for this tip - we have a Family Railcard but I'll look into the Oyster card.
  • Hello The world is my oyster: I don't know how many IMAX cinemas you have up there in Oban; no more than four I'd guess. Now if you haven't been to one, I'd suggest you go to the BFI IMAX in Waterloo to see Polar Express; it's the only way to see this film really - 3D. Danny Baker keeps going back to see it each year.

I can hardly type for laughing - have you ever been to Oban? Our nearest IMAX is 2 hours away! I was thinking of buying the DVD as we haven't seen the film but that is a great recommendation. Thank you. Is that near Waterloo station, and do they have special deals on certain days?
  • The IMAX is very near Waterloo station, (through a rather gloomy tunnel) there are signs from the station pointing you in the right direction. I've seen a film there - it's the biggest screen in Britain - I was impressed. Polar Express is on twice a day. I would suggest that you go to their web page BFI IMAX cinema, you can book tickets on there as well.

If your teenagers are a bit on the alternative or gothy side you could try taking them to Camden. There will be loads there to keep them amused.
