I've recently heard of a cat that likes licking coal, seems very strange, is this usual behaviour.

Yes it's unusal but I've known cats to do this. Poppy used to lick the newly plastered wall in the bathroom. The vet suggested that a vitamin deficiency may be to blame?0

It is called pica - dogs also do it some eat their own **** they are supposed to be short of minerals in their diet. Also pregnant women are said to have food cravings for the same reason.0

My cat loves emery boards, licks them, bites them, gets really excited when I file my nails!
