Pruhealth membership - cancelling

I took out a Pruhealth membership in March 2006 and now wish to cancel.
I think Martin suggested somewhere that people could cancel simply by cancelling the direct debit, even though 30 days notice is required.
I'd much prefer to cancel the direct debit than have to phone up Pruhealth, wait in a queue and then be given a hard sell on why I shouldn't cancel.
Has anyone tried cancelling Pruhealth either by telephone or by cancelling their direct debit?
