Some say the bad reputation that Renaults and Peugeots have for reliability is unfounded, but to be honest I'm of the opinion that that many people can't be wrong. I had an 02 Clio and it was rubbish, always in the garage. A friend as a 53 Laguna, again never out of the garage. :)

But then I have had two Renault 16s, a Renault 4, a Renault 5, a Renault 17, a Laguna and a Grand Scenic. The Laguna was not very reliable, the two 16s were amongst the best cars I have ever driven and the Scenic was middling. Mrs Flyboy had a Citroen Xsara Picasso for eight years, it did over one hundred thousand miles and apart from a dodgy offside rear door lock and a creaky dashboard when new (repaired under warranty), it never spent any time in a garage (apart from services).

I have had many other cars as well, a VW, a Skoda, a Triumph Dolomite and Toledo, a Citroen GSA Special, a Morris Minor, a Wolsely Six, a Ford Sierra, more Escorts than I can count, a Fiesta, three Rovers (including a P6 V8), a Nissan Almera, several Toyotas etc., etc., etc.

Out of those the VW was one of the worst for reliability, the Rovers I hated (except for the P6), but gave only a little trouble. The Wolsely and the P6 are the only cars I really, really, really miss. The GSA wasn't much better than the Rovers, the Fiesta spent more time in the garage than on the road and the Sierra never went wrong and it had one hundred and seventy thousand miles on the clock. The Escorts, on the other hand, where hit and miss, some were excellent, others were a lottery. Whereas, the Toyota Previa we had, spent a total of two months in the garage in the first three years of its life.

The point is, that every manufacturer has reliability issues, just because you know of two cars that have had problems, doesn't mean that every car made by that manufacturer will be the same.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

A Honda FR-V would be ideal but I don't know if they do a diesel for the money you want to spend.

    You misunderstand me.

These were two cars from personal experience, a quick look around motoring forums reveals that Renaults and Peugeots do tend to have an above average quantity of reliability problems. The reputation hasn't come from nowhere.

At no point have I stated that 'every car' made by Renault and Peugeot is certain to be a lemon.
