Credit report reveals more than expected.

Hi everyone
I have recently paid off all my debts and obtained a credit report.
But...on a old credit card the amount is showing as still outstanding, I know I have paid this off. I have tried phoning HSBC direct and they told me they couldn't help unless i had the card number and account password, but I haven't had the card for over 4 years as I cut this up.
Should I go into my local branch with a copy of my credit report and explain the situation? or write to the management company I paid the settlement figure through and ask for a letter of confirmation to forward on.
Also my credit rating was showing as poor, is there any way i can improve my rating, as hopefully I can move away from home in the not too distant future.
Thanks in advance.

Do you not have a copy/receipt from the company confirming the debt has been settled?
You could raise a dispute through Equifax/Experian who would dispute it with the card company.0 -
I would raise is as a dispute with experian/equifax. They will take it up with the company.0

Thanks both, ill try and do that...
Edit: Bum!! Service temporary unavailable.0 -
My understanding is that once you have a clear credit record for a few months, your credit rating will improve.0

once your sort that out, and i know this is going to sound daft but apply for one of the credit cards that have like a 30% apr rate, don't use it for anything and after 6 months close the account and then check your credit score again

I have not known of any one even with poor credit getting turned down for one of the credit cards with the 28% and above apr.
As i said don't use it and after 6 months close this off, if you wish rinse and repeat with another high apr card, remember do not use the card, or if you do have the money first and pay the ballance off in full do not fall into the trap of paying it off later0
