How to dry slices of Orange

Sorry I'm not very good at things like this so this probably seems a silly question - but what is the right way to dry slices of orange so I can use them in Christmas decorations?

  • Hi,
Never a silly question when you don't know the answer.

JUst slice the oranges and either put them at the bottom of a low temp oven that will take a few hours, just keep checking them.
Or if you have airing cupboard you can use that but will take a few days maybe even a week but the smell will be lovely
  • There's a way of doing them in the microwave but I don't know how..maybe someone else here does. Think you layer with kitchen roll between plates or something like that!
    I will be rich :rotfl:
  • Thanks for your help johnlizzy, I'm doing them in the oven at the moment. They smell lovely!

Make sure the heat is really really low, they burn very quickly because of the sugar........ Best to leave them overnight on the lowest setting of your oven
  • I'm interested in doing this but concerned about the amount of energy it would take even on a low setting (elsewhere I've seen 100 degrees centigrade for four hours) and wondered if anyone had any bright ideas for something else I could bake at such a low setting for so long, to make the most of it?

I won't see any replies until tomorrow, but would very much welcome suggestions. Thanks!:)

Delis'a mincemeat recipe involves melting the suet over the fruit at a very low temp for ages, I'm sure it would work in any mincemeat recipe/

i wouldnt bake anything else with the oranges that could create moisture in the oven or the orange slices might not dry properly.

Could you put some meringues in with them, seeing as its on low heat for a long time.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • get a coat hanger and some buttons & a piece of string

slice your oranges, and press GENTLY between kitchen paper

make a hole in the middle of your slice, (a skewer or knittting needle)
tie one end of your string to one end of the coat hanger
slip on an orange slice, tie a knot/slip on a button/tie a knot
slip on an orange slice, tie a knot/slip on a button etc etc

the knots & buttons stop them slipping together (and going mouldy)
keep going till you have a "garland" of oranges
and tie the other end of the string to the other end of the coat hanger
and hand somewhere dry & warm

    they will dry that way

its what i used to do before i got my dehydrator
