'Commission free' is a meaningless term when used by the Post Office etc. because the commission is still there - just hidden in the exchange rate.

When I went about 3 years ago, you needed a £10 note per person to pay for your visa upon entry. I think it caused a problem if you didn't have this. Have a lovely time!

You still do , £10 each , no exceptions , ( English not Scottish ) , used to be one tenner each , no sharing a twenty for a couple , but some posting on Trip advisor disagree.

    Me for one.
Hand over 2 passports at the same time and a £20 note.
    No problem.
That said, we only use Sabiha Gokcen airport in Istanbul, which is pretty civilised. Between 50-75% of those travelling are Turkish, so the visa sticker queue isn't very long, and Air Berlin or TC aren't landing in convoy!
Whereas if you fly direct from UK to Antalya or Dalaman (etc) I can imagine a certain amount of chaos.
But that's par for the course for a lot of countries that either require visa on arrival or Landing Cards.

I usually take about £50 in lira and then the rest in pounds and exchange as we need it, if we have any left means we dont have to pay to change it back

If you are buying clothes etc then you find they sellers prefer you to pay in pounds

You also get a better exchange rate in Turkey than you do in the UK
