Amazon Marketplace - shipping problem

Although I've used it on and off for years I don't fully understand how Amazon Marketplace works - sometimes when I list an item I am not given the opportunity to charge for shipping even though other sellers are doing so - I get the message :

'Sorry! We are unable to allow you to select shipping methods at this time. We will use your default shipping settings for this product. Learn more You will be able to select shipping methods later by editing the product.'

However, try as I might I can't change the shipping method. When this happens I also don't get told by Amazon how much I will receive if the item sells, which is also a bit of an issue for me.

Can anyone explain what's happening/ where I'm going wrong please ?
