As I sound like a scratched record endlessly answering the child saving/investment threads can I instead refer you to the answers from a couple of hours ago - posts 488 and 489 here:

If you are prepared to take some risk for a better return over the long term then share based investments may be a good idea for 18 year investment spans.
Just avoid any Friendly Society "tax free savings" bonds which are appallingly expensive, poor value and highly inflexible.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0
