I would say make a facebook page (you know the ones that people can 'like') and do what my sister in law does. Her salon is in Wakefield, so she joined a few local Wakefield groups on Facebook and posted on the page, offering a 10% discount if they mentioned the page (just really so she knew how effective this way of advertising was, and she got 6 bookings the first week (I know its only one per business day but it's still 6 that she might not have had!)

Also like the above poster has said, maybe if there is a charity raffle local to you, offer a massage as a prize so people are aware of you?

    ps good luck!

You could try your local Gumtree site, but there's the risk of the odd weirdo sending an email. I'd go down the facebook route and also offer a massage/pamper session to a few local worthy causes where you might generate future custom. Anything from slimmingworld groups to mother and baby groups. Best of luck with it.

Groups like W I and Ladies Luncheon Clubs are always looking for speakers. They pay £30 to £50. You could demo a massage with a volunteer, and mabe offer them a raffle prize.

I want to promote myself as a massage therapist. I've been reading about internet marketing, but thinking that the best way is through the local area.

Flyers in cafes etc seems quite inefficient and they quickly get covered.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

Also, as this is a sideline have to think of the cost/benefit so a big investment of money or time might not be feasible.

Try to use local papers. Why not get in touch with your local GP and try to ask if he could recommend you. Also, get online and make sure you're included in local google listing. You can get free advertising credits when you sign up for Google AdWords.

If you're not very good copywriter then I wouldn't recommend using yellow pages since that's the most competitive environment there is to advertise.

The whole idea of marketing your business is to ask where your target market hangs out, what publications are they reading. What existing local businesses could you utilize to market your business. Also, what is your Unique Selling Proposition. I bet you have competitors in your local area (direct and indirect) so why should people chose you?

Good idea to inject yourself into local awareness is to publish monthly newsletter featuring content and tips related to massage. This does not have to be any expensive or fancy newsletter, just get few pages together and distribute them out to your area.

Make sure to collect testimonials which you can sprinkle through your newsletter. Take pictures of you and your happy customers and keep them in your home or wherever you do your business.

Those people who will see this will talk about it and there is nothing more powerful than word of mouth marketing.

    I hope this helps!

i have been asked to make magnets and keyrings for my local slimming world group. I am making them with logo on one side and any text on the other (keyrings) and contact details on one batch of magnets, slimmer of the month awards and slimmer of the week awards. I can do these at a great price so got to thinking that these may work for either other slimming world groups or any other business such as avon, pheonix etc. If you want a price email me at spam as i will just be doing them all in one big bulk lot so i can place a large order for stock in order to do them cheap.
As a rough idea i can do 50 keyrings for £13 and 50 magnets for £22.50 but the more you order i may be able to reduce price.
I have been running my invite company for a year but took a break for maternity leave so am now getting back up and running but all the items i make are top quality and i have over 1200 positive feedback :)
