How much is enough to say "F YOU" to the boss when you have had enough?

I mean how much savings is enough to not worry if you lose your job or are off ill at a minutes notice? On 30k after tax staying with parents so expenses less than half take home pay.

That gives £2500 take home so i would think 10 months wages...25k would be enough to say f off and stick it if things got that bad

however maybe £50k savings before i would be confident of leaving without having another job lined up...

first of all don't do it - if you are being bullied see your harrasment officer - we've all had total idiots for bosses - i should now i've had many in the past 40 years - wanted to walk out many times in the past but i didn't want to give any of them the satisfaction - just knuckle down and plan to move on to a better job - it wont be easy but just do it - walking out is the easy option - and believe me it wont look good on your cv - good luck - fj

Find a new job first. Once out of employment its more difficult to get back into work.

It really depends on what kind of standard of living you want whilst you look for work. There are people on MSE who seem to be able to get by on a lot less than £2500 per month (clever use of cheap ingredients to cook meals etc...) but it's not exactly luxury.

No matter how much money you have find a new job first. As much as it would be very satisfying to do on the spur of the moment the only person you are harming is yourself.

Ah! the "F*** You Money" dream!

My own calculation is that you must have sufficient savings/investments to generate an income (without depleting the capital) sufficient for your lifestyle - whatever that is.

Anything less is a short-term solution, and hence does not constitute real "F*** You Money".

I did it last year I could not stand another minute working for the idiot, I was going to start a business but got offered a much better job by an ex manager within a month. I have a decent pot of savings and no mortgage or dependants now so a bit less of a problem than someone with a young family or a big mortgage. Not for the faint hearted though I woke up sweating a few times thinking what have I done LOL...

LOL. You just wanted a good headline :)
  • Quite a long time ago, now, I 'spoilt' our wedding anniversary dinner. Over a brandy, we got talking about this and I let drop that within the next month or so, I will be telling the boss where to stick the job..... [felt it a good idea to warn her in advance...]

It was about 2 weeks later that I was called in to 'discuss' things and came out with a redundancy payment of £50K+ tax free [by having it paid in two tax years], and the BMW at next-to-nothing.

When driving home, mid afternoon that day, I recall the biggest smile I've ever had on my face all the way!

Maybe this could happen you you?
