With Northern Rock variable rate accounts (the ISAs in particular) are they fairly good at avoiding unexpected big drops in interest rates or not?

NR will give you 2 months notice of any reduction in interest rates.Did you really mean to put loose?

With the Government about to auction NR it is unlikely to reduce its rates too much. A bank with no customers won't attract many bids!
What happens after it is sold off is anyone's guess.0
