Can't stand the place because of:-

    · Staff help normally consisting of pointing vaguely towards an area of the store when you ask where something is.

    · A guy handing me polyfillia when I asked for mastic

    · Being told by a member of staff that can't understand because I don't speak proper English. (I am a Scot)

    But.....

Homebase normally have some decent offers on BBQs!
  • Ha Ha, i know what you mean mate!

will have to give them a try at the weekend.

Nooooooooo!! Get a charcoal BBQ! You don't get the BBQ taste with gas BBQs - might as well just grill the food and take it outside. :p
  • Well its not the same i know. but im just rubbish at doing a charcoal BBQ, its embarrassing!! Should be in my genetics being a man but somethings gone wrong somewhere!

I think they just require too much patience for modern man! Old school man would have spent 8 hours rubbing flint together to make the flame so waiting an hour for the charcoal to be ready was a breeze. Modern man is used to 3 mins in the microwave! This normally leads to spraying far to much lighter fluid on the charcoal making eveything taste like petrol!

I have some safty advise never close the lid on a Gas BBQ with the gas on then press the ignite button even if it wasn't working 30 seconds before hand!

    I couldn't agree more.

If you're having trouble lighting charcoal:

    1) Build your fire on several sheets of scrunched up newspaper which you light to get it going. Obviously, light the newspaper AFTER you have done steps 2) and 3) below.

    2) Use dry kindling or dried small branches as a substitute on top of the paper

    3) Then put on the briquettes or lumpwood (which I prefer)

    4) Once the fire has died down a little, the lumpwood should start to smoke. This is when you should fan it like crazy for at least 10 minutes. I use an old newspaper as a fan.

    5) Add more lumpwood on top of that which is already smouldering.

    6) Don't bother with firelighters unless you're really desperate. Using a fan is far more effective.

We were given a Weber kettle charcoal BBQ as a wedding gift and I am a full BBQ convert now. I used to like them, but the extended cooking times always tried my patience, as did the clearing up.

Our BBQ is fab. It has a lid and keeping the heat in means food cooks just as fast as it would indoors. No more sausages that are charred on the outside while you wait for the middle to reach the point where it won't result in a night sat on the loo.

We cheat and use that pre-bagged charcoal stuff. It comes in a big sack but rather than just being a huge bag of coal you get five individual paper bags inside. You just put one of those in the bottom of the BBQ, light the paper and sit back with a beer! Dead easy. 15-20 minutes later you're cooking.

I know Weber is pretty much top end for price as charcoal BBQs go but I couldn't recommend it any more highly. And you'd probably buy one for the same price as a low-end gas BBQ. :p

There's some in tesco at the moment, not sure if they're any good though. Plus Tesco have got the clubcard double up points :)

There was also a 3 burner which was half price at £150 but i dunno if that's just in my store or it's ended.
What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine..
  • Thanks all for your help and tips!! much appreciated!!! x
