Hi all,
I hope some people out there have the necessary experience and knowledge to help with this.
At work we need to provide tablet-style PC's for our directors to use in the boardroom. Their requirements are as follows:
1. Ease of use (has to be user friendly)
2. Security - needs to be capable of being encrypted because of sensitive data
3. Network or USB port
4. Colour screen
5. A screen size of at least the ipad
There are some other but the above are the minimum. They considered Apple iPads but they are not really suitable for business use and I understand cannot be encrypted. They would also rather pay less for a device more suited to business use. I understand the new blackberry playbook will probably do the trick but it is not imminently available in the UK and this is required now.
Please let me know what you think and better still if you have experience of using any of these devices at work would be most helpful.
Thanks alot.
Jade

Do they have any idea of what they actually want to DO with these tablets in the board room?
Do they use laptops for their purposes now? what programs do they use most? what do they want to do with the tablets they cannot currently do with the laptops?
(because if you get a set of tablets that cannot do those things you'll really be wasting money)0 -

Ok, i win:

10" screen. Flips between tablet and 'regular' laptop. Uses Windows (ease of use...), has USB ports, colour screen.
Plus, corporate security will understand it.
Sounds odd that directors have asked for tablets though0 -
I went through a similar process at my last place of work. The main criteria (same as with any new technology that came along) was "ooh shiny".
They started with tablets, then they needed a stand for them so they didn't have to hold them, then because they were on a stand it was easier to type if they had the keyboard attachments. Before long what they essentially had were laptops except now the whole bulk was too much until... "have you seen those little laptop things, netbooks? We need those now instead."
I'll be surprised if they really need a tablet and it isn't just to score more 'e-penis' points at the next conference.
Just to add, when I left in December there were a few 100 of those little netbooks now sitting in a store cupboard, apparently once the Directors had seen some of the new widescreen laptops they realised the netbook screens were far too small to ever have been useful.0 -
Don't you have someone in charge of IT who can advise, or a regular supplier of equipment and support?
Tell your supplier you want a demo machine as you are considering buying one for each director. Make sure it meets your technical requirements and let the director's play - they like new toys and can rarely use anything but the most basic of features, in my experience anyway.:)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
