Tax Credits - Rental income

Hi,
I started to rent a property out from Last April and trying to work out how I should declare it on tax credit renewal.
Is it works the same as being declared on SA return e.g.
£6000 rental income
£3000- expenses
£3000 Total
£3000 minis £300 = £2700 to be declared on tax credit renewal?
I had some expenses before I started renting the property out. I cannot use this on income tax return but can I minus this on tax credits?
Thanks
MS
