Hi just a quickie just wondered what tax credit do when someone is now on long term sick and not earning. Jointly we earned 24,000 up to March 2011, but this tax year he will not be earning and I only earn 11,000. How will they work out what we are entitled to. We are struggling with 4 children. Are we also entitled to exemption certificate etc not sure what to do. Many thanks

Is your partner still employed (receiving SSP) or has he left.
If he has left check whether he should be getting Contribution Based ESA or qualifys for DLA (Check directgov for criteria)
When you make your declaration in April you can ask tax credits to base your new award on 2011/12 estimated income but be aware if you underestimate you could incur an overpayment.
Based on income of £11,000 you may be entitled to the NHS exemption cards.
Have you informed council as you may now be entitled to council tax benefit and housing benefit (if applicable)Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0 -

Is he seriously ill or perminantly disabled and needing RHAB?0 -

Be aware when declaring this years income, you can deduct £100 from total joint income for every week your partner was receiving SSPForums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0 -
I've done a rough calculation based on £11,000 income, SSP and 4 children and based on a rent of £100 you could recieve 80% of HB and the majority of council tax paid.Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0
